Noctilucent Clouds 2009

Presented below is a gallery of photographs taken between the middle of June and the end of July when I was lucky enough to witness my first display of noctilucent clouds. While the weather over these two months proved less than satisfactory there were always NCLs to be seen when the conditions allowed.

The notable English writer Gilbert Keith Chesterton once said: “There are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds.” The majesty of the NCL activity that I observed during these midsummer nights and mornings is testament to Chesterton’s words. In some ways I don’t think I will ever look at the sky in the same way again.

All of the images were taken using a tripod mounted Sony A200K DSLR with a DT 18 - 70mm zoom lens, save for the first two photographs which were hand held shots. Rather than exclude them solely on the basis of their technical shortcomings I decided to include them here for the sake of continuity and factual value. I  hope that you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed taking them.
