Great sketch. I found this back in May for the first time myself, and have been hooked ever since. Last night was horrible seeing, I couldn't even cleanly split them at 150x, but other nights have been easily split. I check this out now every night, to gauge the seeing. I recall that President Obama viewed the Double Double as the very first object observed during the White House Star Party a few weeks back.

Its official, I'm hooked on doubles.

Hi Phil. It's great to see your comment on the blog. I couldn't agree with you more! Epsilon Lyrae really offers a remarkable view. I seem to have wandered from the well worn path of deep sky observing and ended up hunting down some of the more well known double, and multiple stars up there in the sky. I'm glad I have because there really is a wealth of interesting and colourful stars out there to be seen. I'll find my way back to those faint fuzzies soon enough though.

I've been seeing some great stuff over on your own <a href="http://theguvnah.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow">site</a>. Those images you've been taking are cracking and attempting the Caldwell Catalogue with your father is a master stroke! Good luck with it and have fun.

Thanks for your comment and clear skies,

Ewan

G'day there!

Good post, this. I actually observed the Double Double for the very first time last weekend. It's a great view. I had heard about it for years but for some reason or another, never attempted to find it. Why did I wait so long? A very nice site indeed.

Cheers,
Phil

Thank you for your kind words Jeremy. Jupiter is probably my favourite planet. I can never quite get over the idea that those little gems of light are actually large moons. It always astounds me!

I've not experienced any trouble using rollovers, but I also know that WordPress can be a temperamental creature. To handle the rollover function I use the pixy method by placing the master image and the annotated image within a single file. You can then use the background-position property to shift the image to reveal the hidden annotated version. I'm more than happy to share the CSS code if you haven't tried this out before?

It's always a pleasure to see your comments on the blog. Thanks again.

Great sketch, Ewan. Watching those moons close up or widen back out in real time is just amazing to me.

Did you have much trouble getting that rollover effect to work in WordPress? Over at ASOD, it's really touchy when we add a rollover...it wants to substitute line breaks in weird places & kills the effect if we aren't careful. Anyway, very nice use of the function for labeling!

Thanks Aaron. This was to be — at least for me — the last NCL display of the summer, and what a display! It really was a wonderful sight.

Aaron, and Jeremy thank you both for the kind words.

Aaron it was an amazing sight, and probably the most impressive NCL display I've seen thus far. Living at a latitude of 56° north has it's advantages, but it can also be a curse. You've got those nice planetary views not to mention the warmer climate. How about we do a trade? :-)

Jeremy I cannot put into words just how stunning these clouds look when you see them with your own eyes. They are a wondrous phenomenon to witness first hand.

Clear skies,

Ewan
